Coney Island: In Color

Coney Island: In Color (2022–2025) is my debut monograph, a photographic and sensory time capsule documenting Coney Island through color darkroom prints and typewritten prose. Working across 35mm, 6×7, and the rare 6×17 film formats, I’ve built a visual language shaped by the discipline of analog practice—slow, deliberate, and tactile. The work functions as both archive and love letter—an attempt to hold onto a place defined by perpetual change. Over three years, I made weekly pilgrimages to Coney Island, building a record of its landscape and atmosphere.

This project expands the photographic canon of Coney Island by introducing a queer and trans contemporary perspective, and by embracing color as a vital language of place. While Coney has been extensively photographed, few projects have explored it in color. Each print is hand-made in the darkroom, emphasizing the precision and care—qualities that mirror the devotion embedded in the work itself. The project offers an intimate and tender portrayal of Coney shaped by personal connection, ritual, and care. Through the combination of image, prose, and sensory observation, I invite viewers to experience not only what Coney Island looks like, but how it feels—to sense its resilience, nostalgia, and chaotic beauty.

Ultimately, Coney Island: In Color is an act of devotion—to Coney Island and the people who fill it with life; to color, memory, and light.

I’m currently in the process of getting this projetc published as a book—a tactile, hand-made object that recreates the feeling of being there and honors Coney Island. Updates on the book to come. For now, this page has an exerpt of some of my favorites photographs from the project.
