Coney Island: In Color

Coney Island: In Color is a photographic and sensory time capsule of Coney Island from 2022 to 2025. It’s a project that’s rooted in place, memory and the senses. What began as a Saturday pilgrimage—a passionate effort to document a place I felt deeply connected to—has become an urgent call to remember and preserve. With the city now planning to build a casino and redevelop much of the area, displacing businesses and locals, the historic park is on the edge of change. This project is my response to that tension—showcasing the beauty of the park and boardwalk, its resilience and its uniqueness. Unlike many Coney Island projects that center the people, mine highlights the environment itself. I think of my photographs as the paintings in which one can watch the people play—a place alive with color, clutter, sound, and the weight of its aging and chaotic charm. The project consists of darkroom-printed color photographs, typewritten prose, and visual notes taken while walking the boardwalk week after week to convey the texture, smell, and rhythm of the place. The title is intentional—many of the formative bodies of work on Coney have shaped it in a black and white visual legacy. My project embraces vivid, saturated color—reflecting the sensory overload, warmth, energy and intensity that define it.

The project is now complete, and I’m in the process of piecing everything together to bring it to life as a book—a tactile, hand-made object that recreates the feeling of being there and honors Coney Island.
